Healthy Heart - Low Calorie Diet

by Oey Piu Hian

Calorie gives the energy to perform the daily activities. If the calorie intake id reduced then the body will burn the stored fat in your body to meet the calorific demand. So the basic principle of low calorie diet is to reduce the calorie intake burn the excess fat. For this reason it is also used to shed excess fat and reduce body weight.

Before going for a low calorie diet one is advised to consult a physician. This diet is meant for the excessive obese person, whose Bio Mass Index (BMI) is more than 30. Children and pregnant women should not go for this kind of diet as it may drastically reduce weight and can cause certain illness such as nausea, fatigue, constipation, diarrhea and headaches. If weight is lost very rapidly then it may result in severe complications such as gallstone.

Before starting the low calorie diet observe the following tips * Before going for the diet plan upgrade your knowledge about the calorie content of all types of foods. You can read different books or search the net for required information. * Calculate the amount of calorie you will consume each day. This greatly depends on your lifestyle. For inactive people it is around 1800 to 2000 calorie per day. For people with active lifestyle it is around 2600 calorie per day. * Create a habit of watching the labels of food to know its calorific value. * Sort out the low calorie foods that you like. This will help you to select the menu at the beginning. Fruits, vegetables, cereals, whole grains, beans , meat, fish, low fat dietary products, skinless chicken are some of the options that can be explored while continuing low calorie diet.

* Distribute your meal into 4 to 6 small servings through out the day. Five servings of vegetables and fruits should be taken in a day.

* Don't go for very low calorie diet. A very low calorie diet permits consumption of about 800 to 1000 calorie per day which is much less than the daily needed value. This rapidly burns the stored fat and loses weight drastically. So you will have to limit your food consumption strictly. If you don't abide by the diet then your body will start storing the extra calories as fat in a fast pace and you will get no prominent result

* When following this diet you should also consume certain amount of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are rich in fibers which take longer time to be digested and delay the hunger. This helps in reducing your food intake and hence decreases the calorie intake.

* As because you are on a low calorie diet, it does not means that you can't eat what you like. You can eat whatever you like unless you don't exceed the daily calorie limit. Eat in small amounts and just avoid fat.

By observing the above mentioned tips you can greatly reform the eating habits. Dietary supplements are also needed in this kind of diet. However if you face any problem wont waste time to consult a doctor.

Follow a Low Carbohydrate Diet For Diabetes

by Ann Nelson

A doctor has diagnosed you as a diabetic. You are very well aware about precautions to be taken, but you want to live happy, healthy and prosperous life. You want to enjoy your remaining life, as you enjoyed the earlier part of it. Is it possible to enjoy the life with diabetes? Who will help you to achieve this goal? How to follow restrictions on foods that you like to eat? Well, the answer of all these questions is a resounding yes you can have a normal and happy life. Thanks to low carbohydrate diets. Here is how you follow a low carbohydrate diet to live happy diabetic life.

Diabetes is related to the sugar level in your blood. Increase in this level is one of the causes of diabetes. If you consume foods containing high carbohydrates your blood sugar level rises. Therefore it is your responsibility to maintain sugar levels at normal levels. With the help of medication, exercise and a proper diet you can control your blood sugar level. This process is known as management of blood sugar. The disease is classified into three types-type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

The pancreas in our body produces insulin, which helps to produce glucose. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas is not able to produce sufficient amount of insulin or no insulin at all. Therefore, it's necessary to take insulin for a type 1 diabetic person. Type 2 diabetes is generally related to obesity. In type 2 diabetes, our body does not produce sufficient amount of insulin or the body cells refuse insulin. And gestational diabetes is generally found in women during their pregnancies. The reasons can be hormones released during pregnancy or inadequate amount of insulin produced by the body.

In all three types of diabetes it is the ratio of insulin and glucose that causes several symptoms and complications. So it's necessary to maintain that ratio. Diabetes medication includes insulin. So, what about glucose or blood sugar? Well, it's possible to control the blood sugar level by controlling the carbohydrate intake. The source of glucose in our body is carbohydrates. Our body converts carbohydrates into glucose. Obviously, you can control glucose by controlling the intake of carbohydrates. A low carbohydrate diet for diabetes is based on this very concept.

A low carbohydrate diet for diabetes allows eating foods containing lower amount of carbohydrates. It helps to reduce blood sugar. The limit of carbohydrate intake is around 20 grams in a day. This calls for carbohydrate counting. You can consume low carbohydrates basically from green vegetable and salads. Low carbohydrate diet does not restrict foods that you like to eat including meat, fish, eggs and seafood. You can enjoy these foods and keep your diet as tasty as it was earlier. You need not to give up these foods, but you should not forget the permitted amount of intake. While controlling the blood sugar level, it also provides sufficient amount of proteins and fats. It also provides calories. If you have type 2 diabetes low carb diet will also help you lose weight.

These days there are many companies which manufacture food products following the low carbohydrate diet concept. There are varieties of foods from beverages to tasty meals for you to choose from.

Diabetes is not the end of the world, so go ahead and enjoy your life.

5 Fantastic Tips To Maximise Metabolism

by Tom Parker

Metabolism is a term that describes the number of calories your body burns each day. It has become a very popular term in the weight loss community with many people believing that boosting your metabolism is the key to loosing weight. Whilst metabolism does not have as big an impact as everyone believes it can still help you burn additional calories each day. That is why in this article I am going to be providing you with five fantastic tips to maximise your metabolism.

1) CHOOSE FIBRE RICH CARBOHYDRATES:- Carbohydrates that are low in fibre are relatively easy for your body to digest and the process does not require very many calories. Contrastingly, fibre rich carbohydrates take longer for your body to digest and the process burns more calories. Therefore, when choosing your carbohydrates you should go for the healthy, fibre rich options such as fruits, vegetables and grains.

2) EAT MORE PROTEIN:- Your body burns more calories when digesting protein than it does when breaking down carbohydrates and fats. Therefore, if your diet contains very little protein eating a little more of this important macronutrient is another way to boost your metabolism.

3) DO SOME CARDIO:- Performing cardiovascular exercise (such as cycling, jogging and rowing) can increase your metabolism in two ways. First, cardiovascular exercise allows you to burn a considerable amount of calories as you work out. Secondly, it also raises your metabolism for a few hours after you finish working out. Therefore, by making cardio a regular part of your lifestyle you can notably increase your metabolism.

4) LIFT SOME WEIGHTS:- Weight lifting increases the amount of muscle you have. Your body uses around six calories a day to maintain each pound of muscle mass and two calories a day to maintain each pound of fat. Therefore, the more muscle you have the more calories you will burn on a daily basis and the higher your metabolism will be.

5) STAY HYDRATED:- If you are dehydrated your body may not be unable to perform some important functions. This may then lead to a reduction in your metabolism as your body starts to use less calories. Therefore, by drinking water at regular intervals during the day to stay hydrated you can ensure that you maximise your metabolism.

By following the tips listed in this article you can give your metabolism a much needed boost and increase the amount of calories you burn on a daily basis. Although a faster metabolism will give you this benefit there is a limit to the amount of weight you can lose this way. If you are consuming too many calories it will not matter whether you maximise your metabolism or not. However, if you perfect your diet first, boosting your metabolism can be a highly effective weight loss aid.

Ways to keep Bones Healthy

by gupta

If the diet is deficient in good-quality fats, hormones will be produced in inadequate amounts. And vitamin D, a hormone-like vitamin, will not be utilized well. Further, mineral absorption is dependent on fats. A low-fat diet, in my opinion, makes it quite difficult to have healthy bones.

Unfortunately the typical western diet is now so heavily weighted with white flours, refined sugars and fats it is deplete of many of the micronutrients required for healthy bones. Whilst calcium is necessary, it is not the only critical micronutrient for healthy bones. Make sure your diet has an adequate supply of magnesium, zinc, silicon, boron, folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, Manganese, vitamin K, vitamin D and magnesium.

Drinking a glass of orange juice with your cereal can boost iron absorption by the body. Vitamin C helps the body metabolize the iron. A high quality Vitamin C supplement rich in antioxidants to help fight the harmful effects of free radicals is a wonderful supplement not only to assist iron absorption, but also to combat ageing. Sufficient calcium intake is essential since the human body cannot produce calcium by itself. And the body loses calcium all the time through shed nails, skin, sweat, hair, etc. This is where the calcium supplement comes to help. Calcium could be found in many foods so the accurately designed diet may replace the need for calcium supplement.

Health supplements also provide us with various minerals. Minerals play a number of roles, like helping your body to use the energy from foods. For example, iron supplement provides your body with iron, which is an important component of proteins involved in oxygen transport and metabolism. Calcium supplement provides us with calcium, which is critical for transmission of nerve impulses, regulation of the heartbeat, clotting of blood, and building and maintaining healthy bones. Healthy blood, healthy bones, healthy heart, healthy body and a peaceful mind - all thanks to the healing powers of sex. Next time you're in the mood let her know you've got the doctor on your side!

The sun's rays are a major source of vitamin D and help the body's systems acquire much needed calcium for building healthy bones. However, most people don't need to spend large amounts of time exposed to the sun in order to get their required amount of vitamin D.

Now we know how bones can be made stronger, but how is this process affected by menopause? The loss of estrogen due to menopause or possibly surgical removal of the ovaries can accelerate bone loss for a period of up to 8 years. It is well established that replacing that estrogen helps protect against the risk of osteoporosis.

For those who are lactose intolerant calcium and vitamin D supplementation is even more important because it will be difficult to get the daily requirement through diet alone. Mineralization is a key objective of every body. Imagine if we all had flabby bones. The world would look like a Salvador Dali nightmare. Vitamin D saves us from having flabby bones.

Nine Facts About Fiber

If you've been looking for a way towards a high octane diet, you'll find fiber to be exactly what
you need. Even though research has shown fiber to be powerful, many people aren't taking this nutrient seriously.

To help you fuel your health with fiber, here are 10 facts to help.

1. Fiber fights diseases. A diet high in fiber can help to prevent colon cancer and heart disease. High fiber helps the body to eliminate cholesterol by binding it in the digestive tract. For thousands of years, fiber has been used to stop constipation.

2. Fiber can actually help with overeating. All high fiber foods will take longer to chew and digest, making you feel satisfied longer

3. Most popular foods don't have enough fiber. If you like the more popular foods, you probably need to increase your intake of fiber.

4. Grains offer the most fiber. Dietary fiber is actually plant matter that we cannot digest. The best sources are whole grains and concentrated grain products.

5. Kids need fiber as well. Children that are older than 2 years of age should consume a daily intake of fiber. Kids are most receptive to fiber found in fruits, vegetables, and even fortified breakfast cereals.

6. More fiber needs more water. In order to keep fiber moving through your digestive tract, you'll need to consume a lot of water. With your diet of fiber, you'll need eight or more glasses of water every day.

7. Fiber cannot be cooked out. When you cook your fruits and vegetables, don't worry about cooking the fiber out, as it stays. The fiber found in fruits and vegetables aren't just in the skin or in the peel.

8. You can get enough fiber. If you eat more than 50 grams of fiber in a day, you can get diarrhea and bloating, which can interfere with your body's absorption of other key minerals.

9. Getting the right amount of fiber in your diet doesn't have to be hard. Even though you may think so, getting the amount of fiber you need isn't very hard to do. All you have to do is eat the right foods and you'll be well on your way to a fiber rich lifestyle.

As one of the key ingredients to healthy eating, fiber is something you don't want to skip. Fiber can serve many different purposes, which were covered above. If you aren't getting enough fiber in your diet - you should do something about now instead of waiting until it is too late.

10 Steps If You Need To Lose Weight And Get Healthy

by Mary Janek

If you are one of the millions of people that need to lose weight and get healthy, the following steps will guide you through this complicated process.

The first step to physical fitness is "commitment" along with a realization that there are no magic pills to keep us healthy and control our weight.

Although most people hate to get on the scale and think of it as the enemy, the scale plays a significant role in the realization that is necessary to achieve success. So don't be afraid of the scale, embrace it. Make no excuses and admit your imperfections so that you can build a plan to master your own success.

If you have any health related issues, be sure to check with your doctor before using this guide or any weight loss program.

Let's Get Started:

Avoid setting goals too high! This often leads to one feeling defeated and giving up. Example: If you want to lose 20 pounds total, set your goal to lose 2 pounds a week vs 20 pounds. Be realistic and stick to your program.

  • You have to commit to some form of exercise such as vigorous walking for 30-60 minutes four days a week. You must move your body.

  • Portion your meals and eat several smaller meals daily.

  • Avoid eating in front of the television. Statistics show that people do eat more when eating in front of the tube. Sit at the table and eat.

  • Reduce sugar intake.

  • Reduce sweets by eating only half of what you normally would.

  • Avoid fried foods.

  • Start including more fiber in your diet immediately.

  • Reduce or eliminate your alcohol consumption.

  • Eat only lean meats.

  • Instead of trying to find the closest parking spot at the mall or the grocery store; park further away and walk.

The above steps are meant to be a guide only. Success depends on you and you alone. However, a good weight loss program can maximize the chances of keeping the weight off for good, as well as providing support.

What is the Best Diet for Me?

by Gareth Black

Dieting is one of the two major factors to be implemented to achieve successful and permanent weight loss. The other factor to be taken into account is to embark on a regular exercise program of about an hour's duration each day.

The medical profession together with nutritionists insist that both diet change and regular exercises are vital for losing weight. Whilst one or the other will help with weight loss, the best results are obtained when both aspects of a weight reduction program are carried out together.

For one individual on a diet within a family, then preparing food may present problems. It would be far easier for the food preparer to give each person the same food, not only from the aspect of the food preparation, but also from the aspect of the whole family being seen to be supporting the dieter.

So for the overweight person who wants to diet, the big question is: "Which diet do I choose for the best way to lose weight?"

Of the multitude of diets in magazines, on the net, and on TV, which one should a person use? How can a person evaluate each diet to determine if it will work and if it's likely to get better results than another diet? How can scams be avoided?

Suggestions for helping to choose the right diet follow. Do plenty of research. Ask questions. Draw up a list of the pros and cons of each diet. Be aware of the expenses involved in buying particular food for a diet and any difficulty and time taken in preparation.

(1) Have a look at your national and local government websites for health/weight loss/dieting pages. Most such web sites these days give advice on where to find articles of interest and possibly where to find a range of diets.

(2) Check with your health care professional. He may have information about diets and dieting distributed by local hospitals. Hospitals have an interest in keeping the local people healthy - it makes their operation cheaper and easier.

(3) Have a look in your local newsagent/magazine store/bookstore/library for magazines/books with diets published by a reputable health organization.

(4) The weekly magazines have diet recipes. Again select a diet backed by a reliable health organization. Keep away from diets promoted by food companies - they might be pushing their own products. Choose a diet with easy-to-prepare meals and something the whole family will eat.

(5) Check the popular talk shows on TV - the latest 'fad diets' or 'super weight loss pill' are always mentioned. Be careful here - some of the products on these shows are there because money has been paid not because they're good or they work. And don't believe the line that the show's host has successfully tested the product.

A well-balanced diet should contain enough of the necessary protein, carbohydrates, and the right sort of fats, as well as adequate minerals and trace elements. Because of this its advisable to select a diet recommended by the health professionals rather than one of the 'fad diets'. So stick with the professionals and follow their advice.

The right diet not only helps to achieve weight loss permanently, but also ensures that the dieter is getting enough of the right vitamins and trace minerals in the right quantities. So the importance of selecting the right diet is critical not only for weight loss but also for maintaining good health.

For those people who are well overweight then constant monitoring of the situation by either a doctor or a nutritionist would be advisable.

The right diet is only one aspect of a program to achieve permanent weight loss, the other part being to start a regular exercise routine, with the emphasis being on 'regular' to achieve any degree of success. Dieting on its own will result in weight reduction, but when combined with regular exercises, the amount of weight loss will be considerably greater.

The Holistic Lifestyle

by David H. Urmann

Health supplements are preparations made to supply additional nutrients to our body. Even though one has consumed a complete set of meal per deal, the actual meal in itself may be lacking some of the essential nutrients of the body. With this, by taking in health supplements, the body is insured of its proper body maintenance.

What is health? As defined by the World Heal Organization (WHO) Health is defined as "a state of full and complete mental, physical, as well as social well-being, not only infirmity or the so-called absence of certain diseases".

In 1986, this definition of health was updated and stated by the "Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion" to say that health is known as the "resource for everyday life, not the objective of living", as well as "health is generated as a positive kind of concept that emphasizes the personal and social resources, including the physical capacities".

With these definitions, it is said that to be healthy, the physical outlook of our body should not be the gauged on whether we are healthy or not. It should comprise of the whole aspect of the person, which are physical, mental, emotional, as well as spiritual. Just like in our daily intake of food, it does not mean that by completing the set meal per day, it would mean that you have achieved the optimum nutritional needs of your body. With this in mind, taking in health supplements is the key.

What are health supplements? Health supplements are preparations made in order to supply additional nutrients in our body. Even though one has consumed a complete set of meal per day, the actual meal in itself may be lacking some of the essential nutrients for the body. With this, by taking in health supplements, the body insured of its proper body maintenance. Health supplements comprise of the following: minerals, vitamins, amino acids, fatty acids, as well as herbs. For it to be a supplement, it should be in a form of a capsule, pill, tablet or liquid form. It should not also be taken as a replacement of a meal, for the word supplement in itself is just to be added to your daily meal intake.

It has been proven that the consistent use of such health supplements do promote overall good health. Aside from this, it also aids in the prevention of diseases. This is a research done by the Council for Responsible Nutrition or CRN. With such use, it shows that it provides positive impact on several areas, in terms of health. Moreover, if health supplements were a part of your daily routine, and the fact that they have been used for a long time, they can give you the greatest benefits, instead of just starting late or never taking them at all.

Some of the advantages of taking dietary supplements are listed below:

1. Women that have reached childbearing age who used multivitamins and folic acid reduced the occurrence of neural tube birth defects (spina bifida).

2. By routinely using multivitamins as well as mineral supplements when reaching the elderly years, it can improve the immune functions, which will result to fewer occurrences of infectious diseases. Thus, this cuts the illness period in half.

3. By taking supplements that have calcium as well as vitamin D, it can reduce hip fracture rate of older people. This results to lesser costs and bills for hospitalizations and surgeries.

4. The probable cost savings in the preventive approach to our health is tremendous.

Through proper health management such as taking in health supplements, this vastly lessens the chances of getting debilitating diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, and fractures, among others, which would result to fewer future bills as one gets older.

In addition, to achieve an optimum level of heath, you can follow these guidelines:

1. Eat a well balanced meal such as vegetables and fruits.
2. Drink 8 or more glasses of water per day.

3. Try to achieve 8 hours of sleep in order for your body to recuperate totally.

4. Practice time and stress management in order to be more productive in your daily activities. This is without the hassle of going through unnecessary undertakings.

5. Find time for recreational activities with your family and friends.

6. It is also good to sometimes allow yourself to go out alone for meditation and relaxation.

Moreover, since there are a lot of health supplements in the market these days. It is best to stick with the familiar and trusted brands. Just like in other products, there are still fake ones, especially now that the most in-demand health supplements are the "energy-boosting" types. With the advent of these "magic" supplements, questions about their authenticity really affected many people; especially athletes who thought this can help them.

Here are the popular brands in the market today:

1. Co Enzyme Q10 Gel Capsules

This is actually the most popular health supplement these days. Its main ingredient is a type of enzyme, which can be found in almost every cell inside the body or in various foods. It is an antioxidant that also helps produce energy. Thus, amidst beliefs that it can make you strong and it has curative effects for HIV and cancer, it only possesses very limited effectiveness to boost energy, even if it has been used for many weeks already. Even so, it is noted to be safe to use but quite expensive.

2. Yerba Mate

This is now being vended as a type of diet tea that can boost energy. It actually contains lots of minerals such as iron, phosphorous, calcium, Vitamins B, C and B2. Aside from this, it is noted to contain caffeine as well as Theobromine and Theophylline stimulants, in minimal amounts. Manufacturers would only say that there is only a substance that is "caffeine-like" known as "Mateine" that can make you jittery. Thus, as per studies, it is truly chemically identical to real Caffeine. This means that the energy produced is primarily because of caffeine. There were also studies which indicated that long term use of this tea have resulted to neck and head cancers.

3. Noni Juice

Polynesian Medicine has traditionally used this for centuries as treatment for a number of ailments. This would include hypertension, cancer and diabetes. Even so, further study in this age has proven that these claims are very limited even at the best effort. Hence, the energy provided is only due to the high amounts of natural sugar mixed in it. Since this was derived from a particular kind of plant, it possesses minerals and vitamins such as potassium. As a word of caution though, people with kidney problems and Diabetes should stay away from this.

4. Guarana

This health supplement is either mixed with the popular green tea or in capsule form. Like Yerba Mate, this is a type of diet herb. Similar to Yerba Mate also, it contains caffeine. This is also why you can get energy from this tea. Thus, with this caffeine content it is advised that patients with high blood pressure should steer clear from this supplement. Adverse effects of this drug would include anxiety, heart palpitations, along with some disorders of the Central Nervous System. These effects are similar to people who had a stimulant overdose.
Thus, it is advisable to get some information first about a supplement you are planning to buy before taking it. A physician's advice can be very helpful as well.
