Colon Cleansing Diet Tips - After Your Colon Cleanse

by Colon Facts

Most colon cleanse products suggest a complete colon cleanse once per year. The body can naturally keep the colon clean on its own, as long as a healthy diet rich in soluble fiber, insoluble fiber, chlorophyll, water and fermented foods is followed. The intake of these foods may not be able to clean the colon effectively when blocked; they can help keep the colon free from food sludge and waste build-up.

Sources of Soluble Fiber
- flaxseed, oats, rice, barley, legumes, beans, peas, citrus fruits, apples and strawberries. Soluble fiber helps to improve the good bacteria present in the colon for proper food digestion and elimination.

Sources of Insoluble Fiber
- whole wheat, rye, brown rice, barley, cabbage, beets, carrots and brussel sprouts. Insoluble fiber works as a natural laxative to keep digested foods from sticking to the walls and crevices of the colon.

Sources of Chlorophyll
- wheat grass, barley grass, oat grass and spirulina. Chlorophyll has been shown to decrease colonic cytotoxicity. Cytotoxicity of the colon is thought to be a contributing factor in colon cancer.

Water
- a minimum of ten, 8 ounce glasses of water every day should be consumed. Water is the lubricating agent the body uses to keep bowel movements, moving. Proper water levels can also improve overall health.

Sources of Fermented Foods
- cultured yogurt. Fermented foods are rich with probiotics and prebiotics. These are the natural bacteria that work within the intestine and colon to digest food for better utilization by the body. High sugar and carbohydrate diets are linked with lower than normal probiotic levels which can cause constipation and inefficient absorption of vitamins and nutrients by the intestine. Food that is improperly digested is harder for the colon to expel.

Replenishing Good Bacteria in the Colon

While fermented foods are good for naturally replacing and supplementing good bacteria in the colon, a colon cleanse can rinse away much of the good bacteria currently present in the bowel. These bacteria need to be replenished to keep the colon working effectively. Probiotic supplements can be purchased from trusted health food stores and whole foods markets.

Probiotic bacteria are fragile and will need to be refrigerated in most cases. The refrigeration is needed to keep the bacteria alive until they are consumed. Once the probiotic bacteria die, they are not longer effective in the bowel. Some over the counter probiotics claim to have live bacteria.

Probiotics are measured in the millions. A good probiotic supplement will have a minimum of 10,000,000 or 10 million live bacteria in a single dose. Probiotic supplements may also contain more than one strain of live Lactobacillus, a family of good bacteria commonly present in the intestine and colon.
